Kubiak still could interview with Broncos

Published

The Baltimore Ravens plan to talk to offensive coordinator coach Gary Kubiak to gauge his interest in interviewing for the Denver Broncos’ head-coaching position.

The Broncos reportedly submitted a request to the Ravens on Tuesday night to interview Kubiak. The Baltimore Sun reported Thursday that the Ravens have yet to grant the permission, but they wouldn’t stand in the way if Kubiak is interested in the job.

The Ravens released a statement from Kubiak late Sunday night that he was staying with the team and not pursuing any of the open jobs around the league.

Then the Broncos and head coach John Fox parted ways one day after last Sunday’s disappointing 24-13 divisional-round playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Broncos general manager John Elway and Kubiak are longtime friends. In Denver, Kubiak spent nine years (1983-98) as Elway’s backup and they were roommates for road games. Kubiak also served four seasons (1995-98) as Elway’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with the Broncos.

Harbaugh said Tuesday he was anticipating Kubiak’s return to the Ravens, although he didn’t rule out the possibility of Kubiak leaving.

“I’m planning on Gary being back,” Harbaugh said. “If that changes, we’ll deal with it if it comes up. I don’t anticipate that changing at this time.”

The Baltimore Sun reported Monday night that Kubiak was not interested in leaving the team even after learning of the Broncos’ opening.

Kubiak issued a statement through the Ravens on Sunday night that read: “It is flattering and humbling to be invited to interview for a number of NFL head coaching positions, and I greatly appreciate these opportunities. But I have decided to stay with the Ravens. This is a special organization and we, like (John) Harbaugh says, are building something great. I want to be a part of that and contribute in whatever ways I can.”

Kubiak just finished his first season as Baltimore’s offensive coordinator, and he did not want to interview for any openings until the Ravens were eliminated from the postseason. That happened last Saturday night when Baltimore lost its AFC divisional game to the New England Patriots 35-31.

Kubiak, 53, previously was head coach of the Houston Texans from 2006 to 2013. He was 63-66 overall and led the Texans to their first two postseason appearances. He was fired with three games left in the 2013 season.

Under Kubiak, the Ravens’ offense finished the regular season ranked 12th in total yardage (364.9 per game) and eighth in points (25.6 per game).
