Judge denies move for Hernandez trial

Published

on

A Massachusetts judge on Thursday turned down a request from Aaron Hernandez’s attorneys to move his murder trial to a different county.

Lawyers for the former New England Patriots tight end had asked for a change of venue because media coverage had “poisoned” the jury pool in Bristol County.

Hernandez is charged in the 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd, a semi-pro football player.

Hernandez’s attorneys said a poll they commissioned indicated that residents already have made up their mind in the case and “a deep and objective jury pool simply does not exist in Bristol County.”

Judge E. Susan Garsh disagreed, and the trial is scheduled to start Jan. 9 in Bristol Superior Court.

Hernandez also faces first-degree murder charges in Suffolk County in the killing of two men in Boston in 2012.
