Jets WR Decker game-time decision vs. Chargers

Published

on

New York Jets wide receiver Eric Decker was limited in Friday’s practice and officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s game at the San Diego Chargers due to his lingering hamstring injury.

Decker has been bothered by the injury since training camp, and coach Rex Ryan is relying heavily on the veteran’s sense for his own body in calling Decker a game-time decision.

“He’s a pro. He knows his body,” Ryan said. “I think he works hard to get out there on the field, but yeah, sometimes it’s, ‘Do you play him? Do you sit him? Do you do whatever?’ If you know what really helps a guy moving forward maybe you decide to sit a guy, but he’s a guy that answers the bell. I think he’s missed one game in his career, so he’s a tough guy.

While Decker’s status is iffy, Ryan was surprised by how well fellow wide receiver David Nelson moved Friday on his sprained ankle and he also will be listed as questionable.

“His ankle was unbelievable,” Ryan said. “Some guys are unbelievable healers now. We’ll see how he does, but I was shocked that he was able to go, even on a limited basis. … I’m a little shocked he’s to the point where he is even making the trip.”

The Jets also expect to have cornerback Dee Milliner, who has missed three of the first four games due to ankle and quad injuries. Ryan would not commit to whether Milliner will start and how many snaps he may see.

“He will play, for sure,” is all Ryan would offer. “I feel confident that he is going to play. The number of reps, I guess you’re right, it will probably be determined by how he is playing. But we have some depth now at that position. I feel pretty good about it.”

–Ryan would not comment on whether the team will fine quarterback Geno Smith for cursing at fans during last week’s game or leave the punishment up to the league.

“We’ll handle it the way we see appropriate,” Ryan said. “I think (a decision will) be fairly quickly.
