Jets upset at QB Smith for throwing days after surgery

The New York Jets were not pleased to hear about quarterback Geno Smith throwing footballs to a friend only two days after surgery to repair a fractured jaw.

The New York Post photographed a shirtless Smith playing catch with a friend on Saturday at his apartment complex near the Jets’ training facility in Florham Park, N.J.

“He shouldn’t be doing it right now,” head coach Todd Bowles said after Sunday’s practice. “We handled that internally. We had that discussion.

“He just got surgery; you don’t want him getting infected. (The doctors) said he couldn’t do anything physical, so I’m going by the rules of what they said.”

The Jets starter had his jaw broken in two spots when he was on the wrong end of a punch in the locker room thrown by teammate IK Enemkpali last Tuesday. The Jets immediately released Enemkpali after the incident and he was claimed on waivers by the Buffalo Bills.

The Jets previously said Smith is expected to be out six to 10 weeks.

“I feel great,” Smith, his cheeks swollen, told the newspaper Saturday. “You see me throwing, right? … Get ready for me to come back.”
