Jets’ Smith yells obscenity at fan
New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith shouted an obscenity at a fan who was heckling him following the Jets’ loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J., multiple media outlets reported.
“—- you!” Smith yelled at the fan.
Cameras from WCBS TV in New York showed an angered Smith making his remark to the fan, although it is not clear what the fan said to Smith.
Smith apologized for his comments during his postgame news conference.
“I want to apologize if any kid saw me saying any negative remarks walking off the field,” Smith said. “I kind of let my temper get the best of me in that situation. It’s part of my learning process. I have to get better with that. I have to let that stuff roll off my back, but today I didn’t do well with that.”
Smith did not specify what the fan said to him as he walked off.
The fan was sitting in a section behind the Jets’ bench that chanted “We Want Vick!” during the game, but Smith said the comment directed at him by the fan did not include references to Vick.
Smith threw an interception and lost two fumbles during the game, which the Jets lost 24-17.
Jets coach Rex Ryan said Smith will remain the starter for next week’s game at the San Diego Chargers.
It’s unclear whether Smith will subject to a fine by the NFL.
