Jets’ Ryan seeks ‘appropriate answer’ at QB

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — If the New York Jets have a quarterback controversy and nobody notices, does it make a sound?

That question will be answered Wednesday, when coach Rex Ryan announces the starter for next Monday’s game against the Miami Dolphins.

Ryan was prompted to reveal his starter Tuesday, but he deferred.

“I think that is something that we are going to address tomorrow,” he said. “So, I will feel better about answering questions tomorrow. I’ll give you the appropriate answer then.”

Appropriate answer? No wonder he needs another day. This will take some explaining. Ryan might be up late writing his “appropriate answer,” but that is not the same as losing sleep over the decision. It is not worth losing sleep.

Michael Vick, who took over for Geno Smith after Smith threw three first-quarter interceptions against the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 26, seemed to cement himself as the Jets’ quarterback with steady work in relief of Smith and in the subsequent two games.

However, Vick was similarly bad against the Bills on Monday, going 7-for-19 for 76 yards and an interception before being pulled late in the third quarter of a game the Jets lost 38-3.

Vick, who was almost picked off at least three other times, hurt his calf during the loss, but Ryan said Monday night that Vick wasn’t benched due to injury. On Tuesday, Ryan said Vick’s injury would not be a factor in determining the starter for the Miami game.

Smith went 10-for-12 for 89 yards in relief, but the fact Ryan declined to name a starter Tuesday doesn’t bode well for Smith winning back the job. Each of the previous two times Ryan made a quarterback change — benching Smith for Vick and benching Mark Sanchez for Greg McElroy prior to the penultimate game of the 2012 season — he did so within a day after the previous game.

Nor is it a good sign for Smith that Ryan termed Smith’s performance “pretty decent” but also pointed out Smith took a sack on the final snap of the game that “wasn’t pretty.”
