New York Jets rookie wide receiver Devin Smith was expected to be held overnight in a hospital after breaking ribs during a training camp practice on Friday in Florham Park, N.J.

Smith, the Jets’ second-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, hit the ground hard after catching a deflected pass over cornerback Marcus Williams. The speedy receiver left the field gingerly and later was hospitalized for precautionary purposes.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said after practice that he wasn’t sure what happened to Smith, but the team announced Friday night that Smith suffered broken ribs and was expected to miss most of training camp.

The Jets are hoping to add the speedy Smith to a receiving corps that includes Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. Smith and Jeremy Kerley are in contention for the No. 3 receiver spot.
