Jets hunting for QB after injuries to Fitzpatrick, Smith
The Sports Xchange
An MRI exam on Monday confirmed that New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has a torn ligament in his non-throwing thumb and will eventually require surgery, coach Todd Bowles announced.
The Jets didn’t immediately rule Fitzpatrick out of Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Bowles indicated he would likely wait until Wednesday before making any status updates.
Fitzpatrick suffered the injury to his left thumb during Sunday’s loss to the Oakland Raiders. Backup quarterback Geno Smith injured his left shoulder during the contest and also could be in danger of missing the Jacksonville game.
Asked to rate his confidence level in Fitzpatrick or Smith being able to play, Bowles said: “Right now, not very high. It’s Monday, the day after. The guys are pretty sore. I’ll have a better feel on Wednesday.”
Rookie Bryce Petty is the team’s lone healthy quarterback. He is a fourth-round pick out of Baylor.
Bowles said New York will consider adding a veteran quarterback. Free agent Matt Flynn is one possibility after spending part of training camp with the Jets.
