Jets GM Idzik says ‘I support Rex’
New York Jets general manager John Idzik continues to stick by Rex Ryan even as the losses pile up, saying his coach’s job is safe for now.
This comes a day after the Buffalo Bills benefitted from six turnovers by the Jets in a 43-23 rout at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, dropping Ryan’s team to an embarrassing 1-7 record with a seventh straight loss.
“The last time I checked, all the traits that make Rex Ryan our leader and our head coach are still intact,” Idzik said Monday from the team’s facility. “He’s an excellent football mind. He’s a teacher. He’s a coach. He’s a motivator. He’s a mentor. He’s able to adapt. He sees both short- and long-term vision. He’s a competitor to his soul and he will never quit.
“I support Rex. I continue to support Rex and our coaching staff.”
However, Idzik was non-committal when asked by reporters about Ryan’s job status in the long term.
“As has been our policy, we won’t judge job status in the season,” Idzik said. “We’re purely focused on the Kansas City Chiefs. We’re focused on this week. If this league has taught us anything, it’s that if you look too far into the future, the present will bite you.”
Quarterback Geno Smith was benched Sunday after throwing interceptions on three consecutive possessions in the first quarter. He was replaced by Michael Vick, who was picked off once and lost two fumbles.
“Needless to say we’re extremely disappointed with our 1-7 start,” Idzik said. “I search for words to describe how we feel, given all the work we put into it. It’s a struggle. It’s gut-wrenching. It’s brutal. You feel like you’ve been punched in the face. It’s painful.”
There is also speculation about Idzik’s job status.
“It’s never about me,” Idzik said. “It’s never about me and my job. It’s always about the Jets and my team. That’s always been the focus with me.
“I am responsible for the football operations of the New York Jets. Ultimately I am responsible for the performance of our team and the product that we put on the field. That lies with me. The buck stops here. My performance, to date, is unsatisfactory.”
Ryan’s record with the franchise sits at 43-45, with two AFC Championship game appearances in his first two seasons with the team.
The Jets rank 28th in the NFL in total offense and rank last in the league in turnover margin (minus-13).
After Sunday’s loss, Ryan said he was not concerned about losing his job.
“I’m worried about our team,” Ryan said. “The team is always the focus. That’s the truth. I tell you that because it’s true. I’m not thinking about my future or anything else. I’m just trying to get this team to play better.”
Ryan didn’t immediately announce whether Smith or Vick would start next week at Kansas City.
“Let me tell you, I’m getting sick and tired of the losing, that’s for sure,” Ryan said after the game. “I’m tired of saying it, but you roll your sleeves up and go to work again. That’s all you can do and that’s how you fix it. That’s how I used to fix it and how I’m trying to fix it now.”
