Jets’ Gailey: Geno Smith is starter

Ryan Fitzpatrick was on the field for seven-on-seven drills Wednesday, but the real news for the New York Jets came from offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, who pronounced Geno Smith starting quarterback.

“You see an awful lot of talent there. He can be pretty good if he can get it all together,” Gailey said Wednesday.

There will be no competition, and never was there thought internally that Fitzpatrick was a challenger to Smith’s job, Gailey said.

The Jets were 4-12 last season and changed coaches, firing Rex Ryan and hiring Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles for his first head-coaching job.

Quarterback remains a question mark even if there is some degree of certainty at the starting spot.

Smith is 11-18 in 29 career starts. Gailey would not directly answer whether the Jets felt Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, the top two picks in the 2015 NFL Draft, were superior prospects to Smith.

“That’s a good question,” Gailey said.

Fitzpatrick, who started for the Houston Texans last season, and rookie Bryce Petty are joined on the depth chart behind Smith by Matt Simms.
