Jets DT Richardson charged in high-speed chase
The Sports Xchange
New York Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson — already facing a four-game suspension to start the NFL season — was charged Thursday with resisting arrest and child endangerment stemming from a high-speed chase in Missouri earlier this month.
Richardson was arrested July 14 in St. Charles County, Mo., after a police officer saw him racing another car on I-64 at speeds up to 143 mph in his Bentley Silver Spur.
According to the police report, Richardson tried to elude the officer by leaving the freeway and turning off his vehicle lights. The officer said he tracked Richardson via his brake lights. Once he had Richardson in custody, the officer said he discovered a loaded gun under the driver’s seat and also smelled “a very strong odor of burned marijuana” in the car.
Two other adult males and a 12-year-old boy also were in the car. None of them were arrested.
Richardson is scheduled to appear in St. Charles County Circuit Court in October.
That incident came two weeks after Richardson was suspended by the NFL for an alleged positive marijuana test.
Richardson, the 2013 Defensive Rookie of the Year after being drafted sixth overall by the Jets, had been expected to start on a stacked defensive line that includes nose tackle Damon Harrison, defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson and first-round pick Leonard Williams.
