Jets’ Colon regrets making Porsche analogy
The Sports Xchange
FLORHAM, N.J. — In retrospect, guard Willie Colon wishes he had not compared the New York Jets’ upgraded offense to a Porsche. And he really wishes he had not unintentionally turned up the heat on quarterback Geno Smith by declaring Smith couldn’t crash the new wheels.
“We bought the Porsche,” Colon told SiriusXM NFL Radio on June 2. “We’ve given (Smith) the keys. He can’t crash it. Bottom line. He can’t crash it.”
On Tuesday, Colon said he “misspoke” in making those comments.
“From day one, (offensive coordinator Chan) Gailey said we don’t know who we are, we don’t know what we are,” Colon said. “So I guess me labeling us a Porsche is me emphasizing that we’ve got a great secondary, we’ve got a lot of great wide receivers.”
Colon said his comments about Smith’s new responsibilities were intended to point out that he didn’t have much help in his first two years. Only two Jets receivers (Jeremy Kerley in 2013 and Eric Decker in 2014) had at least 500 yards receiving the last two years. Running back Chris Ivory has been the Jets’ top rusher during the Smith era, but he didn’t top 850 yards in either season.
“In essence, I felt like I was defending Geno,” Colon said. “I felt like I was pretty much saying that all the heat he’s gotten isn’t his fault. He was kind of forced to step into a position where he kind of had to be the man right away.”
While Smith wasn’t available for comment Tuesday, Colon indicated there are no hard feelings between the two.
“At the end of the day, I said what I said,” Colon said. “Me and Geno have talked about it and we’re OK.”
