Jets’ Bowles upset over sloppy tackling
The Sports Xchange
FLORHAM PARK, N.J.- Three days later and head coach Todd Bowles was still furious about the Jets’ poor tackling in Sunday’s 34-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders.
After the game, Pro Football Focus estimated the Jets missed 19 tackles, including multiple tackles on long touchdown catches by Raiders wide receiver Michael Crabtree and running back Taiwan Jones.
If only the total was that low, according to Bowles.
“We had more than that,” Bowles said. “There were more than that. They were higher. Believe me, they were a lot higher. They were in the 20s.”
It wasn’t the first time a Bowles-coached defense has missed 20 tackles – “I’ve had some. You have those games every now and then where nothing went right,” – but he hopes it’s the last time it happens to the Jets.
“It’s unacceptable,” Bowles said. “We weren’t good enough. They know it wasn’t good enough. We know it wasn’t good enough. We have to get better at coaching it. They have to get better at playing it.
“It is one game. It’s the first time we fell apart like that. We have to come back together and it can’t happen again.”
–The Jets added depth to an injury-plagued wide receiver corps on Wednesday, when the team signed Shane Wynn to the practice squad. Wynn has yet to appear in an NFL regular-season game.
On Tuesday, the Jets auditioned multiple bigger names, including ex-New York wideout Greg Salas, as they looked to shore up a unit that has been hit particularly hard by injuries. No. 1 wideout Brandon Marshall suffered toe and ankle injuries against the Raiders on Sunday and didn’t practice Wednesday. Nor did second receiver Eric Decker, who played through a knee injury last Sunday.
Rookie deep threat Devin Smith sat out practice Wednesday with the ankle injury that left him inactive against the Raiders. Smith missed the first two games of the season with rib and lung injuries sustained during the first practice of training camp.
In addition, third receiver Chris Owusu is out for the season after suffering multiple concussions.
The Jets’ healthiest receivers are Kenbrell Thompkins, who had six catches in his debut with the team on Sunday, and Jeremy Kerley, who has been in Bowles’ doghouse from almost the start.
“It’s concerning right now,” Bowles said of the Jets’ depth at wide receiver. “We don’t have a lot of guys, but its early. We have a couple of days to let them heal up. I’ll be concerned toward the weekend if they aren’t making any progress.”
NOTES: FB/LB Julian Howsare was released from the Jets’ practice squad on Wednesday. Howsare signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Clarion University following the draft last May and split time during the preseason between linebacker, his natural position, and fullback. He was amongst the Jets’ final cuts on Sept. 7 before being re-signed to the practice squad the next day. … S Calvin Pryor (ankle) did not practice Wednesday. Pryor missed the Jets’ 34-20 loss to the Raiders last Sunday with the ailment. Head coach Todd Bowles said he didn’t know if Pryor would play this Sunday against the Jaguars but that several players – including converted CB Marcus Williams, practice squad S Rontez Miles and S Dion Bailey, the latter of whom started in place of Pryor against the Raiders – were all getting reps that would normally go to Pryor.
