Jets angle for QB Fitzpatrick trade
Ryan Fitzpatrick’s one-year run in Houston is coming to an end, but he could be near a reunion with Chan Gailey, who guided Fitzpatrick’s best years with the Buffalo Bills.
Fitzpatrick is expected to be traded to the New York Jets on Wednesday. The Texans are overloaded at the position after signing Brian Hoyer to a three-year deal and retaining Ryan Mallett on a two-year, $7 million contract.
The pair of pupils played for Texans head coach Bill O’Brien in New England and Mallett was given Fitzpatrick’s starting job in 2014 before a season-ending pectoral injury ended that run after just two starts.
Gailey is now offensive coordinator of the Jets. Fitzpatrick played well in fits and starts for the Bills while Gailey was head coach and play-caller from 2010-2012. He had 71 touchdown passes in 45 games during that stretch.
Fitzpatrick, 32, would be joining his fourth team in four seasons. He went from the Bills in 2012 to the Titans (2013) and Texans.
Geno Smith is the assumed starter in 2015 but given the coaching change and new general manager, the Jets are thought to want to introduce competition — young and old — before fully committing to Smith.
Michael Vick, who replaced Smith as the team’s starter for a three-game stretch in October and November, is a free agent.
