Jaguars seek right combination on defense, too
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. For the second straight week, the Jacksonville Jaguars are shaking up their starting lineup.
Josh Evans will get the starting call at free safety over Winston Guy and J.T. Thomas will replace LeRoy Reynolds at the Otto linebacker spot Sunday against the San Diego Chargers.
Last week, the Jags moved rookie Luke Bowanko to starting center and Sam Young took over at right tackle against the Indianapolis Colts. Bowanko will start at center and Young will start at right tackle this week.
And, of course, there was that mid-game shakeup when, trailing 30-0 at halftime against the Colts, coach Gus Bradley benched veteran quarterback Chad Henne in favor of rookie Blake Bortles, the third overall draft pick who will get his first NFL start in San Diego.
Linebacker Paul Posluszny returned to practice on a full-scale basis Thursday and proclaimed that he’s ready to play Sunday. Posluszny suffered an ankle injury in the Indianapolis game.
And there was good news on offense. Tight end Clay Harbor, missing in action since suffering a calf injury July 28, appears ready to play.
Tight end Mickey Shuler missed his second straight day of practice Thursday because of illness. He will be re-evaluated Friday.
Fullback Will Ta’ufo’ou (ankle) did not practice for second straight day and will test the ankle on Friday to see if it’s strong enough for him to accompany the team to San Diego.
Free safety Sherrod Martin was signed as a free agent on Tuesday and will serve as the backup to Evans at free safety. Martin was with the Jaguars during training camp but was released on the final day of cuts.
