Jaguars see chance for WR Blackmon to return
INDIANAPOLIS — It’s possible the Jacksonville Jaguars could get two first-round picks by the time the 2015 draft ends with the potential return of 2012 fifth overall pick Justin Blackmon a realistic possibility.
Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said at the NFL Scouting Combine on Friday that the team is hearing only positive reports of Blackmon’s progress. He is currently suspended after a series of off-field issues but Caldwell said the Jaguars are hopeful the NFL will make him a priority soon.
“It’s in Justin’s hands, really,” Caldwell said. “From what we hear second hand, he’s doing the right things. Right now, those reports are positive.”
The Jaguars enter the offseason not counting on Blackmon, who is just 25, and are not able to have contact with him. He was suspended indefinitely in November 2013 and arrested with marijuana in Oklahoma in July 2014.
The uncertainty could steer the Jaguars toward adding another veteran receiver. Cecil Shorts III is a free agent, and Jacksonville has been linked to potential free agents such as Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb and Denver Broncos tight end Julius Thomas.
“Any year you have cap space is a good year,” Caldwell said. “You have to be wise with it. There’s no sense of urgency for us to go out and spend for the sake of spending. We’ll be aggressive if there’s a player we want, go out and get him.”
