Jaguars’ owner wants Blackmon back

Published

Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan said Friday that he would welcome back troubled wide receiver Justin Blackmon once he is reinstated by the NFL.

Blackmon has been on an indefinite suspension since Nov. 1, 2013, due to repeated violations of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

He also was arrested last July for possession of marijuana — his third arrest involving alcohol or marijuana.

He checked into a treatment center in September to address his substance-abuse issues, and he is expected to apply for reinstatement by the league.

“I’m very optimistic,” Khad told reporters Friday in Phoenix. “I think he’s paid his dues. I think he’s got his life together. I think he can be a role model for people who have gone through hard times. We’re waiting for him.”

Earlier this week, general manager Dave Caldwell said he hoped to know Blackmon’s status before the draft April 30.

Once Blackmon applies for reinstatement, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will have 60 days to render a decision.

Khan, in his third year as owner of the Jaguars, also discussed the performance of the team in two years under Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley. The Jaguars went 4-12 in 2013 and 3-13 in 2014.

“A lot of things are moving in the right direction, but we have to win more,” Khan said. “Obviously, I’m disappointed we didn’t win more, but so is everybody else. Dave and Gus are disappointed. We’ve got to do what’s needed as well as (show) creativity and hard work to start winning more games.”

He called 2015 “a critical year for us.”

Khan also said he plans to keep the Jaguars in the annual rotation of London games. The Jaguars played the San Francisco 49ers (a 42-10 loss) at Wembley Stadium in 2013 and the Dallas Cowboys (a 31-17 loss) in 2014, and they will play the Buffalo Bills next season (Oct. 25).

“The playing of a game in London has been vital,” Khan said. “It’s played a key role in raising Jacksonville’s visibility globally and helped us with revenue and sponsors.”
