Jaguars land TE Julius Thomas
Denver Broncos tight end Julius Thomas agreed to a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars and will officially sign the deal Tuesday when free agency begins.
According to multiple reports, Thomas agreed to the deal Monday evening with a value expected to be at least $9 million per season.
Thomas was the No. 1 tight end on the market largely because of his production in the red zone with Peyton Manning and the prolific Broncos’ offense. He had 24 touchdowns and 108 receptions in the past two seasons as Denver’s starting tight end.
Jacksonville is building around second-year quarterback Blake Bortles, who had 11 touchdown passes as a rookie last season.
Signing Thomas is the capper on a strong open to the 2015 league year for the Jaguars, who went 3-13 last season after a 4-12 record in 2013. Jacksonville agreed to deals with defensive tackle Jared Odrick and offensive tackle Jermey Parnell earlier Monday.
Thomas gives Bortles an improved fleet of receivers. Wide receivers Allen Hurns, Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson all contributed as rookies in 2014.
The Jaguars have the third overall pick for the second consecutive year and could lock in on one of the top pass rushers in the draft unless Southern California defensive tackle Leonard Williams is available.
Williams is ranked the No. 1 overall prospect in the draft by NFLDraftScout.com, but the team’s ahead of Jacksonville in the draft — Tampa Bay and Tennessee — need quarterbacks.
