Jags WRs Shorts, Lee sidelined in practice

Published

on

The Jacksonville Jaguars are having problems keeping their wide receivers healthy.

Two receivers already bothered by nagging injuries were sidelined during Wednesday’s workout as Jacksonville prepares for Sunday’s game in London against the Dallas Cowboys.

Veteran Cecil Shorts, who had hamstring problems all year, and rookie second-round draft pick Marqise Lee, who has not been fully healthy all season, were knocked out of practice Wednesday.

Lee has a sprained ankle, and Shorts was pulled from practice due to hamstring tightness.

Their condition will be updated Thursday.

In the past when Shorts experienced hamstring tightness, he missed time. The problem first occurred in the opening preseason game, and he missed 23 days. He injured a hamstring again in practice three days before the opener and sat out the first two games. Shorts also strained a hamstring in San Diego in the second half on Sept. 28 and missed the next game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Shorts has only 28 catches for 256 yards, and that puts his future with the Jaguars in jeopardy because his contract is up at the end of the year. Considering his recent injury history, he will have difficulty getting a big contract at the end of the season.

Lee missed three games earlier in the season with a hamstring injury and got only six snaps in Cincinnati last Sunday.

He also said he has nursed a toe injury most of the season, although he has not been on the injury report.

“I had nicks and nacks, and the toe (injury) after the Miami game, and the coaches didn’t want to put me in and make me do too much and re-injure me,” Lee said before practice. “They’ve got a plan. I’m down with the plans no matter what it is. I’m here to support my teammates and help as much as I can.”

Shorts participated on 53 snaps in Cincinnati, while Allen Robinson was in for 55 and Allen Hurns, who made two touchdown catches on bad passes, had 54.

If Lee and Shorts can’t play, Mike Brown and Ace Sanders, the other two receivers on the team, would see action. Brown was inactive the past two games. Sanders has played mostly as a punt returner since returning from a four-game suspension. He has just three catches this year.
