Jackson joins Seahawks, who go on without Chancellor
The Sports Xchange
The Seattle Seahawks announced the signing of Fred Jackson on Monday, but coach Pete Carroll seemed resigned to not having Pro Bowl safety Kam Chancellor, who remains a holdout.
“We have to go ahead. That’s all that everybody wants us to do,” Carroll told 710 ESPN Seattle. “The players want to do that, the coaches have to do that. Our fans, they’re going to be disappointed to not see Kam out there, as we all will be, but it’s like he’s not healthy enough to play yet; he can’t go yet.”
Chancellor is seeking an upgrade over the five-year, $29 million contract he signed in 2013.
“Everything’s pretty well-stated,” Carroll said of negotiations. “He knows where we’re coming from, and we know where he’s coming from. So we just have to keep going and do what we need to do, and he has to do the same.
“This is an important week to see where he is, so we’re ready to go about our business.”
Part of that business involved adding Jackson to replace the injured Robert Turbin and the traded Christine Michael.
“We like Marshawn on third down, but he needs a break now and then,” Carroll said. “I like to have a real steady guy going in. Without Turbo available to us, (Jackson) was the steady guy to go in. Christine wasn’t that guy to take that spot, and we didn’t want to put that on (undrafted rookie Thomas Rawls) at this point.
“We think that’s going to be a good, solid move and get a real classy guy to add to the locker room.”
As for the trade of Michael to the Cowboys on Sunday, Carroll said, “We spent a lot of time with him. We gave him plenty of opportunities. He’s a good, hard-working kid. … We just thought it was time.”
On Monday, the Seahawks also signed three players to fill out their 10-man practice squad.
Cornerbacks Justin Coleman and Kevin Short and defensive end Robert Thomas join seven players who were in Seattle’s training camp and signed to the squad Sunday: wide receivers Kasen Williams and Kevin Smith, running back Rod Smith, linebacker Eric Pinkins, offensive linemen Will Pericak and Terry Poole and tight end RaShaun Allen.
