Inside The Trenches: Things to Look For On Day 2 of Senior Bowl
Come look inside to see at what you should look for on day two of senior bowl practices.
Tuesday was a good start to the week as the players showed a glimpse of talent level and competitiveness. However, today will be the first day of full pads and that’s where the fun really begins. With that said, let’s look at some things to look for on day two:
- T.J. Clemmings was great in run-blocking situations, but he really struggled out on an island in pass protections. He tends to overset versus speed rushes and drop his head, which causes him to overextend his arms and leave the inside moves open. It’s something he needs to clean up today.
- Za’Darius Smith isn’t going to make all the plays, but he’s a guy who consistently flashes and makes big plays. If he can continue that his stock will rise significantly.
- Laken Tomlinson is dominant at the point of attack in the running game and showed the ability to create movement at the line of scrimmage. However, like most of the offensive lineman, needs to do a better job in pass protection. Tomlinson is a very linear person, who doesn’t move well laterally. He needs to show some improvement in that area today.
- Carl Davis was the most impressive defensive lineman on the North Team yesterday. Can he build off that performance? It’s going to be interesting to see how well he does as the offensive lineman become more familiar with his game and tendencies.
- Max Garcia versus Danny Shelton will be a great match up today. Garcia was the only offensive lineman who consistently held his own versus Shelton during practice. It is extremely hard to move Shelton off his spot, but Garcia did a great job of turning Shelton and opening up running lanes on occasion.
- La’el Collins’ day seemed to really mirror Clemmings as he had a lot of struggles in pass protection, but he was better in run blocking drills. It could be a case of needing to get his feet under him and comfortable in this environment. It will be paramount that he has a good day today.
- Ty Sambrailo is technically solid, but he has always had trouble with power and that showed up yesterday. Sambrailo has the same trouble as players like Jake Matthews and Eric Fisher have had in that past in that they don’t have the strength to hold up against the power-rushers. It will be interesting to see how Sambrailo bounces back against players like Preston Smith today.
- Tre’ Jackson needs continue the momentum of his first practice as he was one of only a few offensive lineman to have more good moments than bad in pass protection.
- Grady Jarrett was the best defensive lineman out of both teams yesterday as he was rarely blocked and dominated with his quickness and strength. As the offensive linemen adjust to his quickness, it will be interesting to see if he can win other ways or if he is a one-trick pony.
- Trey Flowers had a very good day yesterday as he was stout at the point of attack and showcased some good pass-rush ability with a nice inside swim move. If he can build off that and show a bigger pass-rush repertoire he can significantly boost his stock this week.
- Owamagbe Odighizuwa plays with full effort on every play, but on pass-rush drills he really struggled to beat the opposing offensive lineman inside. He needs to do a better job of selling the outside move before he darts and bull rushes inside.
- Preston Smith quietly had a very productive day yesterday as he shed blocks at will and showcased some pass-rush ability that he didn’t show on film much. He needs to prove that wasn’t a fluke and build off that momentum.
