Injuries strafing Cardinals quarterbacks
TEMPE, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals currently have one healthy quarterback on the roster, but they hope they don’t have to use him Sunday against the Redskins.
Rookie Logan Thomas, however, could get his first start. Carson Palmer is still trying to recover from a damaged nerve in his shoulder. Backup Drew Stanton suffered a concussion last week against Denver, so he is questionable.
By mid-week, the Cardinals should have an indication if Stanton and/or Palmer will be available to play. If one of them can go, they will be fine at quarterback. But if neither can play, then they have to sign someone.
It likely would be someone familiar with Arians’ offense. Arians doesn’t want to have to play a quarterback who has no idea of the Cardinals’ protection schemes.
“We’ll formulate a game plan to beat Washington and then see what quarterback is available,” Arians said. “I’m comfortable with Logan, when he gets all the snaps and all the reps, that we’ll be able to put a plan out there for him to be successful.
“We feel like one of those other two will be back. If not, obviously we have to move on to door No. 2 to get somebody to back up Logan.”
Later, Arians admitted there “was a good chance” neither Palmer nor Stanton would be ready to play this week.
No matter who plays quarterback, they will need more help from receivers than either Stanton or Thomas received in Denver.
Arians counted seven dropped passes, most coming in critical situations. It was unusual for a receivers group that is normally sure-handed.
REPORT CARD VS. BRONCOS
PASSING OFFENSE: F — Receivers and running backs dropped at least six passes. That’s a conservative estimate. General manager Steve Keim said on radio Monday he pegged the number at nine. Starter Drew Stanton was efficient but left the game in the third quarter with a concussion. Rookie Logan Thomas completed one pass – for a touchdown – but looked shaky the rest of the time.
RUSHING OFFENSE: F — The Cardinals gained just 37 yards on 19 carries. The offensive line didn’t get any push, nor did it open holes. There was nowhere for Andre Ellington to go. The longest gain was six yards.
PASS DEFENSE: D-minus — It would be an F if not for the two interceptions, one of which set up a touchdown. Otherwise, the performance was horrible. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie was abused by Demaryius Thomas, who set a Broncos record with 226 yards. There was little pass rush, either.
RUSH DEFENSE: C — The Broncos got little out of their ground game, but they didn’t have to try because they were gaining so much through the air.
SPECIAL TEAMS: B — Rookie kicker Chandler Catanzaro made two more field goals and is still perfect for the season: 11 for 11. The rest of the groups were just average.
COACHING: C — It is hard to fault coach Bruce Arians and staff. They couldn’t control receivers dropping so many passes, or quarterback Drew Stanton getting knocked out with a concussion in the third quarter. A case could be made that defensive coordinator Todd Bowles should have tried someone other than Antonio Cromartie on receiver Demaryius Thomas.
