Houston Texans Draft Primer: Which Players Fit
Find out which players make good sense for the Houston Texans in this weekend’s NFL Draft.
Texans Draft Needs: Quarterback, Offensive Tackle, Linebacker, Wide Receiver, Safety
Texans Selections:
Round 1- 16th Overall
Round 2- 51st Overall
Round 3- 82nd Overall
Round 4- 116th Overall
Round 5- 152nd Overall
Round 5- 175th Overall
Round 6- 195th Overall
Round 6- 211th Overall
Round 6- 216th Overall
Round 7- 235th Overall
Good Fits Early:
DeVante Parker- The Texans parted ways with Andre Johnson in the offseason and although DeAndre Hopkins looks like the real deal, the Houston offense can use another playmaker on the outside. Parker can catch the ball in traffic and has immense physical tools and would be a great fit if he’s available at pick No. 16.
Randy Gregory- The next team that has too many pass rushers will be the first team with that affliction. Randy Gregory is a Top 5 talent who will drop due to failed drug tests. If he were to land in Houston he would never have to face a double-team playing on the same defense as monster J.J. Watt. If Jadeveon Clowney can come back healthy, the Texans will have the most feared pass rush in football.
Nelson Agholor- The former USC wide receiver has been flying up draft boards as he’s a very precise route runner who can make tough catches in traffic. Agholor doesn’t have the physical dominance of a Dorial Green-Beckham or Kevin White, but he doesn’t have the headaches of DGB either.
Don’t be surprised if: The Texans attempt to move up in the draft to acquire Marcus Mariota. If Tennessee can’t execute a trade with San Diego and they feel that Mariota isn’t their guy then Houston will have a legitimate shot to move up to either No. 4 Oakland or No. 5 Washington to grab their first franchise quarterback.
Potential Late Round Targets:
Karlos Williams- The former FSU running back runs very strong between the tackles and will immediately add depth to a Texans backfield that includes the sometimes injured Arian Foster.
Daryl Williams– The massive Oklahoma offensive tackle will be a middle round pick and surprisingly enough could compete for a starting job. Rick Smith has shown the propensity to draft bigger guys late and Williams could be a steal.
Hau’oli Kikaha- The former Washington defensive end could be a nice fit for the Texans if they decide to go with a wide receiver early. Kikaha doesn’t figure to be a starter, but he’s a hard working young man who can help on special teams and in pass rush situations.
For the Texans draft to be considered successful, they must get an impact player with their first round pick, whether it be a potentially elite wide receiver or a big time pass rusher. Houston seems to have a solid roster that outside of the quarterback position is close to a playoff team. It will be difficult, if not impossible to upgrade at QB, so strengthening the rest of the roster is important.
