Holmgren, Martz will coach college all-stars
Former NFL coaches Mike Holmgren and Mike Martz will act as the coaches for the fourth annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl on Jan. 17, the NFL Players Association announced Monday.
The college all-star game will be played at StubHub Center on the campus of California State University Dominguez Hills.
Holmgren, 66, has been out of football since losing his job as president of the Cleveland Browns in 2012. He previously coached the Green Bay Packers (1992-98) and Seattle Seahawks (1999-2008), and he is thought to be interested in returning to an NFL sideline.
Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie, who worked with Holmgren in Green Bay, brought him in for a day to consult about their program after they fired coach Dennis Allen in September. A week after his visit, Holmgren said he would “probably not” end up coaching the Raiders and that “no jobs were discussed.”
San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh reportedly is the top candidate on the Raiders’ list to replace interim coach Tony Sparano after the season.
The NFLPA Collegiate Bowl will be a reunion of sorts for Holmgren and Martz, who faced off for six seasons in the NFC West when Holmgren coached the Seahawks and Martz led the St. Louis Rams (2000-2005).
Martz, 63, has been out of the NFL since his stint as offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears ended in 2011.
