Hardy’s trial date pushed back
Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy’s trial on domestic violence charges was delayed until after the season, according to multiple reports Thursday.
Hardy was arrested in May on charges of assaulting and threatening Nicole Holder, his former girlfriend. The trial had been scheduled for Nov. 17.
In September, the Panthers placed Hardy on the exempt/commissioner’s permission list, the same status as Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.
According to reports, Hardy was against the trail delay because he wants to case to be resolve and hopefully resume his career.
Hardy started the season with a one-year, $13.1 million contract as the team’s franchise player. He will become a free agent after the season, but his future with the Panthers could be in doubt even if he is cleared to return to the NFL.
After playing in the season opener, Hardy was placed on the team’s inactive list. He continues to receive his salary during the suspension.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he had not seen Hardy since he was placed on the commissioner’s list. Rivera remained optimistic that Hardy would be reinstated after his case was heard in court.
“I believe, from what I’ve been told, he’s been working out and doing the thing he needs to do,” Rivera said recently. “Hopefully, when things are all worked out and everything comes to a conclusion, everybody can go forward.”
Hardy was named to the Pro Bowl in 2013 and led the Panthers in sacks.
