Harbaugh answers his TV critics
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — In a season in which his team has committed the most penalties in the NFL, San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh would like to see one more flag thrown.
He wants NFL analysts penalized for piling on.
Fewer than 24 hours after his team’s most satisfying win since January, a 26-21 victory over the previously unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles, Harbaugh found himself defending the state of his locker room rather than the state of his defense Monday.
“Personally, I think that’s a bunch of crap,” Harbaugh said of two broadcast reports in particular that have claimed his 2-2 team is in some sort of disarray.
Interestingly, two former 49ers made the claims.
Former cornerback Deion Sanders, now an analyst on the NFL Network, immediately let the air out of the 49ers victory balloon on NFL GameDay Final on Sunday night.
“They want (Harbaugh) him out,” Sanders insisted. “They’re not on the same page.”
Sanders went on to say: “I really want to know if they’re really for the head coach. I got a question with that. Are you really down with your head coach, San Francisco 49ers? Because the way it looks and what I’m hearing, you’re really not down for your head coach. And that’s a problem.”
Asked for his source of this information, Sanders insisted it was “guys in suits.”
Former quarterback Trent Dilfer, now an analyst for ESPN, went on ESPN Radio on Monday morning with a report that supported Sanders’ claims.
“I do believe it’s become almost toxic,” Dilfer said of the strained relationships. “Offensively, it’s frenetic. It’s spitball. It’s ugly. It’s horrible clock management. I mean unexcusable clock management.
“Lack of energy by offensive players. Series ended and there was no communication. Guys slouching their shoulders. Just bad body language.”
Asked specifically about Sanders and Dilfer, Haubaugh insisted: “I haven’t seen Trent or Deion around much.
“… Whenever you’re taking about unnamed sources, when somebody’s got a good story to tell, they want to put their name to it. If you had a good story to tell, you’d put your name to it. If I had a good story to tell, I’d want to put my name to it. So I don’t give a lot of credibility into the unnamed source.”
