Happy Arians cancels final day of Cardinals’ minicamp
The Sports Xchange
TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians canceled the last day of minicamp, saying he’s satisfied with what his team accomplished on the field this offseason.
The final day was scheduled for Thursday.
“Throw the guys a bone because they have showed up, they’ve worked,” Arians said Wednesday. “We’ve had great attendance and great effort this entire spring.”
The Cardinals suffered no serious injuries during the offseason, and Arians wanted to keep it that way.
“We’ve taken enough chances, as hard as we’ve practiced,” he said. “You just have to judge it. Are we ready to stop? I think we are.”
–While Arians is happy with the majority of his roster, he’s still looking for a third quarterback. Logan Thomas, a fourth-round pick a year ago, is still an erratic passer. Rookie Phillip Sims has been impressive at times, and veteran Chandler Harnish is also in the mix.
At least for now.
“Not really pleased with any of them,” Arians said. “They’ve all got to step it up for us to have a third quarterback.”
–Tight end Troy Niklas, a second-round pick in 2014, will undergo a procedure this week to remove a stabilizing device from his left ankle. Niklas hopes that will give increased mobility.
“When I’m running, I’m kind of stiff and I can’t get down in my stance as much as I’d like to,” Niklas said. “Taking those out will help me get a little more flexibility in my ankle.”
Darren Fells, who played well at the end of last season, is currently the top tight end on the roster. Of the six tight ends on the roster, only Fells and Niklas have played in an NFL game. Their action came last season.
“Still got a ways to go,” Arians said when asked to assess the position.
