Hall of Famer Kelly has staph infection
Former Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, who announced in September that he is cancer-free, told the Miami Herald that he has a staph infection in his bones.
Kelly said he is undergoing an eight-week treatment for the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection, which includes intravenous antibiotics three times a day.
MRSA is a type of staph infection that is resistant to some antibiotics.
In August, Kelly concluded months of chemotherapy and radiation treatment for jaw cancer and the pain was gone. No evidence of cancer was found after more biopsies in September.
However, Kelly said pain has returned.
“I was cleared in September of the cancer — I have another MRI in two weeks,” Kelly said. “The toughest part for me was I was almost ready to take out my feeding tube, I was feeling good and they said they need to do some biopsies. Those 12 biopsies put me back so far.”
Kelly had another operation after the biopsies and is still on a feeding tube.
Kelly, who starred at the University of Miami, returned to the school to serve as an honorary captain for Saturday’s game against North Carolina.
