Gruden: Griffin should be back by Nov. 16 game

Published

When Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will return remains an open question, with some reports suggesting he might play on Monday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

But Redskins coach Jay Gruden said in a radio interview this week that Griffin should be back no later than the Nov. 16 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I would guarantee Tampa, most likely, unless something happens between now and then,” Gruden said on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Wednesday. “You’ve got a good bye week, you’ve got a couple weeks to make sure it’s ready. Obviously Robert is a quick healer. He works extremely hard in the training room. So the process could be sped up a little bit depending on how he feels.”

The Redskins play the Cowboys and Vikings in their next two games, then have a bye.

Griffin is recovering from a dislocated ankle, and Gruden noted Griffin will need considerable practice time to be ready to play in a game again. That suggests he is unlikely to play on Monday.

Colt McCoy has been named the Redskins starting quarterback for Monday’s game, assuming Griffin is not ready to return.
