Green-Beckham impresses at Sooners’ Pro Day

Published

on

For the first time since arriving at the University of Oklahoma, wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham was able to show his skills for NFL teams while wearing a Sooner uniform. The talented pass catcher and several other pro hopefuls worked out at Oklahoma’s Pro Day on Wednesday in front of representatives from 30 NFL teams.

Most of Oklahoma’s notable prospects stood on their NFL Scouting Combine numbers, including Green-Beckham, but they participated in positional drills.

During his workout, Green-Beckham impressed with his long-striding speed and route acceleration, cutting with quickness and power in his breaks. He also caught the ball well and flashed the NFL potential that might land him in the first round, despite his off-field rap sheet. Green-Beckham transferred to Oklahoma last summer after his dismissal from Missouri, but his waiver to play in 2014 was denied by the NCAA.

“I’ve been working hard this year,” Green-Beckham said after his workout Wednesday. “I know that I’m ready to get to the next step. I felt like I improved on the field, with my academic studies, took advantage of everything. I didn’t take days off.”

At the Combine, Green-Beckham posted a 4.49 40-yard dash, 33.5-inch vertical, 9-foot-11 broad jump, 4.45 short shuttle, 6.89 3-cone drill and 13 reps on the 225-pound bench press. But the bigger test in Indianapolis came in the meeting rooms, where he did his best to answer concerns about his issues off the field, which include multiple failed drug arrests.

“At the Combine I got a lot of questions,” Green-Beckham said. “Overall I got great feedback about it, just showing honesty and showing you’re accountable. That’s the main thing they want to see. They want to know what really happened, that’s when you have to confess to everything and let them know what went on.”

Green-Beckham caught passes from former Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton, who is now a graduate assistant for the Sooners. He also threw to a pair of Oklahoma tight ends at the school’s Pro Day, although neither started their college careers at the position: Blake Bell and Geneo Grissom.

A former top quarterback recruit, Bell was “a tad robotic” in his routes but looked natural catching the ball on Wednesday, a scout in attendance told NFLDraftScout.com. Moving to tight end for his senior season, he posted only 16 catches, but showed intriguing potential, especially as a red zone target. Grissom played the majority of his career at defensive end, but spent his sophomore season in 2012 at tight end in an attempt to get on the field. He didn’t finish his career with any catches, but Grissom showed off his pass-catching ability on Wednesday and improved his broad jump number from the Combine (9’10”).

Cornerback Julian Wilson, who looks the part at 6-2 and 205 pounds, ran a disappointing 40-yard dash (4.58) at the Combine, but improved that number Wednesday, running in the 4.44-4.49 range. With his size and speed, Wilson is an intriguing late round option, fitting the mold of what teams like the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers seek at the position.
