Give him a hand… off: RGIII steps up on-field work

Published

on

As quarterback Robert Griffin III upped his practice regimen to include handoffs with the scout team on Friday, the Washington Redskins (1-5) are dealing with far more pressing injury concerns leading up to Sunday’s home game against the Tennessee Titans (2-3).

Second-year cornerback David Amerson was listed as questionable despite taking part in all of Friday’s session as he attempts to pass through the league’s concussion protocol. His availability is critical with the defense already without top cornerback DeAngelo Hall for the remainder of the season and with Tracy Porter ruled out again due to a lingering hamstring injury.

“That’s up to the trainers and the doctors with the concussion protocol,” coach Jay Gruden said of Amerson’s availability Sunday. “Obviously we take the concussions very seriously. We want to see him run around out there, make sure there are no repercussions whatsoever and make sure he gets fully cleared. Everything is on a positive track for him to play but I just want to make sure he has got everything right about him.”

Akeem Jordan (knee) is also out, while fellow linebacker Perry Riley (knee) is questionable after missing last week’s loss at the Arizona Cardinals.

Griffin returned to limited practice Monday and slowly increased his work throughout the week, including going through the motions of handing off with the scout team during Friday’s team periods. Gruden has said Griffin will be the team’s starter when he is ready to return from the dislocated left ankle suffered during the first period in Week 2.

“He is just doing what he is doing,” said Gruden. “He took a few more reps today in the team periods, handing off and things of that nature and just slowly but surely getting back into the flow. His progress will be up to the trainers and the doctors moving forward.”

–Gruden said the team has yet to decide whether to activate defensive end Stephen Bowen or wide receiver Leonard Hankerson, who returned to practice this week but remain on the physically unable to perform list as they recover from major knee injuries.

“I think Bowen is probably a little bit more ready if he were to go. Hankerson, probably we just need to see him a little bit more and make sure – because this is the first time he has practiced with me, with our new system. So we just want to make sure he has everything down before he goes – probably another week or two, maybe.”
