Giants work out Welker, Cooley

Wes Welker, Hakeem Nicks and Chris Cooley are scheduled to work out for the New York Giants on Tuesday.

Since releasing drop-prone slot receiver Preston Parker, the Giants were thin at wide receiver. But with Victor Cruz expected to debut this week at Buffalo with his calf injury healed, the Giants are still shopping for help.

Welker, 34, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Chargers put became a five-time Pro Bowl pick with the Dolphins, Patriots and Broncos. Concussion concerns derailed his 2014 season with the Broncos and Welker went unsigned in free agency.

Nicks was drafted in the first round by the Giants in 2009 and spent last season with the Colts. He failed to catch on with the Titans and Cowboys since the end of the 2014 season. Nicks’ career arguably turned in 2012 when he suffered a broken foot following back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.

Cooley, a tight end, last played in the NFL in 2012. Cooley, 33, played for the Redskins and attempted a comeback this summer, working out for Washington and the Arizona Cardinals. Giants’ No. 3 tight end Jerome Cunningham (knee) was out last week.
