Garrett wants to return with Cowboys

Published

Jason Garrett, a free agent now that his season has concluded, said Monday he wants to continue as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys lost 26-21 to the Green Bay Packers in Sunday’s divisional playoff game.

On Monday, Garrett was asked on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas if he wants to return as the Cowboys’ head coach.

“Absolutely. This is a great organization,” Garrett said. “I think we really built a football team that we can be proud of, and there are some really good things ahead for this team.”

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones called Garrett “my coach of the year” after Sunday’s loss. Garrett has a 42-32 career record.

The bulk of the coaching staff is working on expiring contracts, including passing game coordinator Scott Linehan, defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli and offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Bill Callahan.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith denied a report Sunday night that he is ready to hire Marinelli as defensive coordinator.

Garrett would not comment on the report but said the team wants to keep Marinelli.

“I know Rod Marinelli has done a fantastic job for us since he’s been here,” Garrett said Monday. “He’s done a great job coordinating our defense this year. We have every intention of keeping Rod Marinelli in his current role as defensive coordinator. We’ll take care of the business things after we take care of the business of today, but Rod’s a helluva coach and has done amazing things with our football team this year.”

After Sunday’s game, Jones took questions from reporters as he stood outside the visitor’s locker room at Lambeau Field.

“There certainly will be changes,” Jones said. “These rosters have turnover, automatically. We’ve got coaches that are certainly highly thought of, so they’ll be looking at their individual situation. That’s pretty much what we do.

“We have about a 30 percent turnover every year. What is the core? Who is the core? That’s a part of what we’ll be doing. We’ve had more numbers of players play a key role in our success this year than I had thought we would when we started this season.”

Jones said taking care of Garrett is at the top of his list when it comes to the coaching staff.

“I’m very complimentary of the coaching job we’ve done, starting with Jason,” Jones said. “He did just an outstanding job, and he’s my coach of the year. Having been part of what made him have that success is what he did with the coordinators. They did a great job as well.”
