Game roundup: Rodgers’ TD pass with 3 seconds left lift Packers

Published

on

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Aaron Rodgers threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Quarless with three seconds left to lift the Green Bay Packers to a 27-24 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Rodgers completed 24 of 42 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns and engineered the winning 11-play, 60-yard drive.

Wide receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb also caught touchdown passes for Green Bay (4-2), which has won three straight.

Miami (2-3), playing for the first time since beating Oakland 38-14 in London on Sept. 28, was unable to hold onto a 24-17 lead with five minutes left.

Wide receiver Jarvis Landry, running back Lamar Miller and wide receiver Mike Wallace scored for the Dolphins. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw for 227 yards and two scores with two interceptions.

Browns 31, Steelers 10

CLEVELAND — Ben Tate rushed for two touchdowns and Isaiah Crowell ran for one to carry Cleveland to a crushing defeat of Pittsburgh.

It marks only the second time the Browns beat Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who carried an 18-1 record against them into the game.

Brian Hoyer completed only 5 of 11 passes in the first half, but he threw for 146 yards in building a 21-3 halftime lead for the Browns (3-2). The Steelers dropped to 3-3.

Patriots 37, Bills 22

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — New England claimed sole possession of first place in the AFC East with a win over Buffalo.

Tom Brady passed for 361 yards with four touchdowns and improved to 23-2 against the Bills in his career. It was Brady’s 60th career game with more than 300 yards passing.

Wide receiver Brandon LaFell caught two touchdown passes and Stephen Gostkowski kicked three field goals of more than 40 yards for the Patriots (4-2), who have won two straight.

The Bills (3-3) were playing their first game since new owners Terry and Kim Pegula took control of the franchise earlier in the week.

Broncos 31, Jets 17

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Peyton Manning recovered from a slow start and threw three touchdown passes to inch closer to Brett Favre’s career record as Denver survived a scare to beat the New York Jets.

Manning finished 22 of 33 for 237 yards as the Broncos moved to 4-1. His touchdown tosses — a 1-yarder to wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and a 22-yarder and a 4-yarder to tight end Julius Thomas — gave him 506 for his career, two shy of Favre’s mark.

Quarterback Geno Smith — one week removed from being benched at halftime of a 31-0 loss to the San Diego Chargers — likely bought himself some job security by going 23 of 43 for 190 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Jets (1-5), who have lost five in a row, their longest losing streak since a six-game skid in 2007.

Ravens 48, Buccaneers 17

TAMPA, Fla. — Joe Flacco torched a depleted Tampa Bay secondary with a career-high five touchdown passes as Baltimore cruised to a win.

Flacco finished the day with 306 yards on 21-for-29 passing as the Ravens (4-2) sprinted out to a big lead and never looked back.

Coach Lovie Smith promised during the week that the Bucs (1-5) would be a different team Sunday than they were when they last played on their home field in Week 2. Instead, it was more of the same as they head into their bye week with plenty to work on.

Lions 17, Vikings 3

MINNEAPOLIS — Detroit’s defense stifled, harassed and physically dominated Minnesota’s offense.

With Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson and running back Reggie Bush sidelined with ankle injuries, the Detroit offense didn’t do much either.

Detroit’s defense sacked Vikings rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater eight times, picking him off on three occasions and holding the Vikings to 212 total yards.

The Lions (4-2) won at Minnesota (2-4) for only the second time in their last 17 trips.

Titans 16, Jaguars 14

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, the 32-year-old journeyman making just his sixth career start, played efficient, turnover-free football in Tennessee’s win over Jacksonville.

Whitehurst hit 17 of 28 passes for 233 yards and helped set up three Ryan Succop field goals.

The Titans (2-4) took the second-half kickoff and drove 77 yards in 13 plays as Succop’s 21-yard field goal gave them a 13-7 lead.

Jacksonville (0-6) elected to have kicker Josh Scobee attempt a 55-yarder with 12 seconds left to win the game. The kick was low and defensive lineman Sammie Lee Hill blocked it.
