Former Seahawk Robinson broke up Harvin fight

Published

Former Seattle Seahawks fullback Michael Robinson, now an analyst with NFL Network, revealed on Sunday that he was the one who broke up the fight between wide receivers Percy Harvin and Golden Tate.

The Seahawks traded Harvin to the New York Jets for a conditional draft pick on Friday. Reports surfaced Saturday that Harvin had physical altercations with players and was a destructive force in the Seattle locker room.

It was reported that Harvin gave Tate a black eye during a fight before the Super Bowl earlier this year. Tate now plays for the Detroit Lions.

Robinson, who played for the Seahawks last season, told NFL Network that he intervened in the fight.

“Something did go on at the Super Bowl that a lot of fans don’t know about,” Robinson said. “There was an altercation in the locker room between Percy Harvin and Golden Tate. It saddens me because I was a leader on that team and to know that this information got out — usually Pete Carroll-coached teams, this type of thing stays in-house. There was an issue, I physically broke it up, I was there, you would have to ask those guys what they were arguing about, I’m not at liberty to talk about it.”

Robinson confirmed that the fight occurred one day before the game, in which Seattle routed the Denver Broncos 43-8.

“We kind of talked about it afterwards,” he said. “I talked to Percy and Golden and they ironed their situation out. But again, you’ve been in locker rooms, these type of things happen all the time. Families fight. That is what is so disturbing. Again, this type of information usually doesn’t get out of that locker room. Why it comes out now, almost a year after the Super Bowl is mind-boggling.”

Harvin joined the Jets and told the team’s web site that he is excited to be with them.

“I just think they got a lot of the pieces here,” Harvin said. “You’ve got Geno (Smith), with a great veteran behind him. You got (Eric) Decker. You got two great running backs. They’ve always had a great defense here. So that’s all exciting stuff to me. But all I remember is them being a very tough team. I know they have a few losses in their hands, but they was in every single game with a couple of plays here and there that could have easily switched the game. So I definitely think this team has all the pieces. So like I said, that’s what excited me, knowing they already had the pieces here and I could just fit right in, try to make my little plays, and hopefully I can be a little difference.”

One of Harvin’s defenders is former quarterback Brett Favre. The two were Minnesota Vikings teammates in 2009 and ’10.

“I was surprised that that trade happened,” Favre told NFL Network. “I have no idea why it happened. Percy was a good guy in the locker room. Really quiet. You know, he had a migraine issue, I don’t know where that is. I’m really not at a position to make any comment because I don’t know other than what my dealings were with Percy and they were great. I thought he was an outstanding player.”

However, Favre did say that Harvin tended to keep to himself in the locker room and could see a situation in which he may be confrontational because of his passion to win.

“He can be a little combative, but I say that in a good way,” Favre said. “Percy’s all about doing whatever he can to help you win. He’s tough as nails and really that’s all he cares about. So if you start picking him apart, I don’t want to say he can turn against you, but he’s just tough. I really liked him as a player and a person.”

Before settling on a conditional draft pick, the Seahawks tried to deal Harvin for an elite tight end, but got no takers. Seattle proposed sending Harvin to the Broncos for Pro Bowler Julius Thomas, according to ESPN. NFL.com reported that Seattle tried to acquire Cleveland Browns tight end Jordan Cameron for Harvin. The Seahawks also reportedly contacted the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers about a deal involving Harvin.

ESPN also reported that if the Seahawks were unable to make a deal, they would have cut Harvin.

Last season, Harvin played just one regular season game because of a hip injury. He has 22 catches for 133 yards with one TD this season.
