Former Giants coach Sherman dies
Allie Sherman, who once replaced Vince Lombardi on the New York Giants’ coaching staff and became a successful head coach, died Saturday at age 91.
Sherman was 57-51-4 in eight seasons with the Giants including NFL championship game appearances in his first three seasons after being promoted to head coach in 1960. He previously coached in the CFL and returned to the team as a scout. When Lombardi left to become coach of the Green Bay Packers, Sherman replaced him as offensive line coach. Two years later he was promoted to replace the retiring Jim Lee Howell.
Sherman worked alongside Chris Berman on ESPN’s first NFL television broadcast in 1987.
At 5-10, 160, Sherman played quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles for five seasons, primarily as a backup. He starred at Brooklyn College.
