Former Bronco Schlereth rips Denver’s offensive line

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos’ offensive line finds itself under siege — not only from opposing defensive linemen, but the media, which includes former Broncos guard Mark Schlereth.

Now working for ESPN, Schlereth, who last played in 2000, described the offensive line as “worse than bad — it’s horrendous,” during an appearance on ESPN Radio’s Denver affiliate on Tuesday.

“I watch every game of every team every week. It’s bad technique-wise, athleticism-wise, toughness-wise,” said Schlereth. “If I was grading, giving an ‘F’ would be kind.”

The Broncos are on their third starting offensive-line combination of the season, after moving Louis Vasquez to right tackle, Manny Ramirez to right guard and Will Montgomery to center for the Week 10 game at Oakland.

The unit struggled against St. Louis and allowed Manning to be hit five times — twice resulting in sacks, one in an interception and one in a holding penalty against left tackle Ryan Clady after he was beaten by Rams defensive end Robert Quinn.

Clady and left guard Orlando Franklin remained at their spots all season, but have struggled. Franklin committed nine penalties this season, more than all but three other offensive linemen league-wide.

In the meantime, Schlereth expects to hear about his comments from former teammates.

“I know I’m going to get a bunch of texts and calls for this, but I’m sick,” Schlereth said. “I just broke down three game films and it’s sickening.”

Broncos head coach John Fox was asked about Schlereth’s remarks.

“You know, everybody’s got an opinion I understand that,” Fox said. “But they’re like a body part, and everybody’s got one. So I’ll just leave it at that.”
