The ultimate goal of shopping is to get the best product you can for the lowest price. When it comes to the National Football League, the same rule applies. But just like everyday supplies, when the product continues to perform at such a high level, you can bank on the price increasing eventually.

However, for the time being, these five teams have discovered some of the top bargains in the league. Let’s go ahead and take a look.

Emmanuel Sanders, WR, (Broncos) – This should be considered highway robbery. Emmanuel Sanders, 27, had a Pro Bowl season in Denver. The 5-foot-11 wideout gathered 101 catches for 1,404 yards, which ranked 5th in the league. He also pitched in nine touchdowns. All of those numbers are career highs.

There’s no question Sanders enjoyed his first season in the Mile High City.

“When I came to Denver, my first thing to do was earn Peyton’s trust,” Sanders said. We stayed in a hotel during training camp, and I would be in his room going over signs and signals, just trying to gain that trust. Obviously it’s starting to pay off.”

Having the opportunity to play with Peyton was like a dream come true.

“Playing with Peyton Manning, you get an opportunity to sling the football around and catch a lot of balls. I’m having the best season of my career right now, and I’m having fun for the first time. I’m enjoying it, and that’s why I said it’s wide receiver heaven.”

For the production Denver received from Sanders, you’d think he was getting top money at his position. Instead he ranked 29th in salary ($5 million), behind names like Victor Cruz and Brian Hartline.

Willie Young, DE, (Bears) – There wasn’t many bright spots in Chicago this past season, as the Bears finished last in the NFC North with a 5-11 record, which resulted in the firing of former head coach Marc Trestman and his staff.

One of the few bright spots was defensive end Willie Young. After Lamarr Houston tore his ACL by celebrating, Young stepped in and showed out. The 29-year old led the team in sacks with 10, while only starting in eight games. During his 46 game career in Detroit, Young only accumulated three sacks.

Unfortunately, Young’s season ended due to an Achilles injury, which will sideline him for 6 to 9 months. However, at the same time, Young only made $950,000 in base salary this season.

Young signed a three-year, $9 million deal back in March. Get well soon.

Antoine Bethea, S, (49ers) – San Francisco had to find a replacement for Donte Whitner, who they lost to the Cleveland Browns. The answer was Antoine Bethea.

The organization received backlash at the time, since Whitner only received a four-year, $28 million deal, while San Francisco gave Bethea $21 million over four years. The difference was so minuscule that it seemed crazy for the team to take a downgrade at the safety position.

Well, Bethea quickly silenced those critics. The nine-year veteran was third on the team in tackles (86) and second in interceptions (4).

Bethea was a replacement for the Pro Bowl. which was his third appearance.

Steve Smith, WR, (Ravens) – A lot of people left Steve Smith for dead during his last few seasons in Carolina, which is why Baltimore was able to snatch up the 35-year old at a bargain price.

Smith signed a three year contract worth up to $12 million. He led the team in receptions (79) and receiving yards (1,065). He also reached the end zone six times.

Being in Baltimore has rejuvenated Smith.

“I realized that I was with an organization where anything short of a Super Bowl is unacceptable. If we are in the tournament, we are expected to go to February. There were times [in Carolina], man, where it was like, ‘Man, I hope I get a chance to maybe play in the playoffs.’ That’s not a slight to anybody, but that’s just what I am experiencing here with the Baltimore Ravens, two-time Super Bowl champs in the past [12] years. That’s just amazing and eye-opening to me.”

After hearing whispers of a possible retirement, Smith had this to say on Instagram.

“It was a GREAT season this old man played for you and my teammates. “I’ve enjoyed every moment and couldn’t have asked for a better fan base. Look forward to a better season next year and watch us go WIN IT ALL.”

Brandon LaFell, WR, (Patriots) – Another former Carolina Panther wide receiver?

Bill Belichick and his New England Patriots never cease to amaze, as they always find a way to maximize their talent. The 28-year old LaFell only had 49 catches for 627 yards in Carolina in 2013, but in 2014, he caught 83 balls for over 1,000 yards to go along with eight touchdowns, including the playoffs.

You can attribute his success to the hard work New England puts in.

“The way we work, the way we practice, is all new [to me]. It’s not like we didn’t work hard in Carolina, but we work a little harder here,” LaFell said.

LaFell agreed to a three year, $9 million deal last Spring.

While these five tremendous athletes are great bargains now, don’t expect it to stay that way if they continue to perform at an elite level.
