Fans celebrate Patriots’ Super Bowl victory
Thousands of shivering fans lined the streets of Boston — many standing on top of massive snowbanks — to cheer on the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots during the victory parade Wednesday.
Fans chanted “Brady! Brady!” as players waved, celebrating the Patriots’ fourth NFL title in 14 years. Their 28-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday was their first championship in a decade.
The team rolled through downtown aboard the World War II-style amphibious “duck boat” vehicles that have become a part of the city’s championship parades.
Some fans climbed on giant piles of snow left from last week’s blizzard and Monday’s storm to get a glimpse of quarterback Tom Brady, coach Bill Belichick, other players and their wives and girlfriends.
Players snapped selfies and took turns waving the Lombardi trophy.
Fans sported No. 12 Brady jerseys and held “We are the CHAMPIONS” signs. One read: “Belichick for President.”
A smiling and proud Brady held his young son, Benjamin, who waved to the crowd.
Tight end Rob Gronkowski, who won his first Super Bowl ring, left the duck boat along the route to give the fans high-fives.
Meanwhile, Belichick said the severe criticism of the Seahawks’ play calling at the end of Super Bowl XLIX is “totally out of line.”
The Seahawks’ decision to throw on second-and-goal from the 1-yard line with 26 seconds remaining resulted in cornerback Malcolm Butler’s game-saving interception.
Belichick came to the defense of Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.
“There has been a lot of criticism that I don’t think is anywhere close to being deserved or founded,” Belichick said Tuesday during his weekly appearance on sports radio WEEI in Boston. “That football team is very good, very well-coached, and Pete does a great job.
“Malcolm and Brandon (Browner), on that particular play, just made a great play. I think the criticism they’ve gotten for the game is totally out of line and by a lot of people who I don’t think are anywhere near even qualified to be commenting on it.
“I wouldn’t be able to say enough about Seattle. They’re a great football team, well-coached. They deserve so much credit for what they’ve done and how well they’ve done it.
“I know they are disappointed, as we’ve been in that spot a couple times ourselves. So the high that we feel is probably not as high as the low that they feel. But that’s a really good football team.”
