Falcons to sign OT Jake Long
The Sports Xchange
Offensive tackle Jake Long is expected to sign with the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday.
Long, the No. 1 overall pick in 2008 with the Miami Dolphins, made multiple stops to the team’s Flowery Branch, Ga., headquarters for team physicians to gauge his physical readiness to return to football. He was released by the St. Louis Rams and is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Signing Long before Week 1 would have put the Falcons on the hook for a full year guaranteed salary.
The New York Giants also hosted Long for multiple visits.
The Falcons have 2014 first-rounder Jake Matthews at left tackle but have had long-standing issues up front.
Long, 30, has only played left tackle in the NFL, with the Dolphins and Rams, but would be a fit on the right side if he proves healthy. Right tackle Ryan Schraeder entered Monday’s game as an untested wildcard up front.
Long was drafted out of Michigan by Bill Parcells, the father-in-law of current Falcons’ personnel man Scott Pioli.
