Falcons target Bowles, Quinn
The Atlanta Falcons reportedly have narrowed their head-coaching search to Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Sunday that the Falcons prefer to hire a defensive-minded coach.
Former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan appeared to be a top candidate for the Falcons before reports surfaced Sunday that he is in talks to become the Buffalo Bills’ next coach.
Bowles, 51, had a five-hour interview with the Falcons on Saturday, a league source told ESPN.
Bowles originally was scheduled to interview with the Falcons on Thursday but the interview got pushed back after owner Arthur Blank’s mother passed away, according to ESPN. Bowles instead interviewed with the Chicago Bears on Thursday and with the San Francisco 49ers on Friday before coming to Atlanta.
Quinn, 44, was part of the first wave of coaches interviewed by the Falcons along with Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Former Bills coach Doug Marrone and Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin also interviewed with the Falcons.
According to ESPN.com, the Jets were prepared to fly to Seattle immediately after Saturday night’s divisional-round playoff game if the Seahawks had lost to try to hire Quinn as their head coach. The Seahawks beat the Carolina Panthers 31-17 to advance to next Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.
