Falcons re-sign DE Biermann
The Atlanta Falcons re-signed defensive end Kroy Biermann on Wednesday. Terms were not disclosed.
Biermann, 29, started 15 games last season and set a career high with 80 tackles to go along with 4.5 sacks and three passes defensed. It was a rebound season for Biermann, who missed the final 14 games in 2013 due to an Achilles injury.
Biermann was a part of general manager Thomas Dimitroff’s first draft class in 2008. The former fifth-round pick from Montana has played in 98 games, made 37 starts and registered 21 sacks. He has also been versatile, including playing as a hybrid linebacker in former defensive coordinator Mike Nolan’s scheme.
However, Biermann was also the 42nd-ranked defensive end by Pro Football Focus last season. His return to the Falcons under new head coach Dan Quinn was uncertain because Biermann is too light (6-feet-3, 255 pounds) to fit Quinn’s 4-3 scheme, but he could help on special teams and in a backup role. He played 867 snaps in 16 games last season and tallied 43 tackles and 4.5 sacks.
