Ex-fiancee says McDonald repeatedly attacked her

The ex-fiancee of former San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears defensive tackle Ray McDonald claims in court records that he repeatedly attacked her over several months.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, a restraining order obtained by the newspaper Tuesday shows the 27-year-old woman says McDonald once choked her and once put his knee to her stomach while she was pregnant.

The newspaper reported that in her application for the temporary restraining order, the woman contends that starting in February 2014 after the couple got engaged, McDonald began a pattern of “verbal abuse and controlling behavior” that escalated into “pushing and shoving” and then into “full attacks that happened frequently.”

“I was ashamed to tell friends and family,” she states in the document, adding that she believes McDonald has a drinking problem that aggravated his behavior. “I hoped he would change. He changed some, but he began drinking again so I moved out.”

The woman alleges in the restraining order that, in an Aug. 31 incident, McDonald “choked me, dragged and tried to remove me from the house and put his knee in my stomach when I was 10 weeks pregnant.”

That incident led to McDonald’s arrest on Aug. 31, but he was not charged with any crime.

McDonald, 30, signed with the Bears in March on a one-year contract after being cut by the 49ers in December following what the team called a “pattern of behavior” after authorities announced McDonald was being investigated for possible sexual assault charges.

McDonald was arrested May 25 for misdemeanor domestic violence and child endangerment, accused of physically assaulting the woman while she was holding the couple’s baby. The Bears released him later that day and the case remains under investigation.

According to the 911 call that led to the May 25 arrest, McDonald violently broke through a bedroom door to get to his ex-fiancee and their infant daughter.

A woman, identified as the mother of the alleged victim, told a dispatcher that McDonald was drunk during a 911 call at 3:41 a.m. in Santa Clara, Calif..

The 6-foot-3, 290-pound lineman then tried to take the baby before leaving, according to the 911 call.

McDonald was later arrested at the San Jose home of retired 49ers defensive lineman Justin Smith, a former teammate.

McDonald was arrested again two days later for violating an emergency protective order by returning to the woman’s home. He posted a total of $20,000 bail for both incidents and was released each time.

The court order requires McDonald to stay 300 yards away from both the woman and the couple’s 2-month-old son.

McDonald had 39 tackles and three sacks in 14 games last season. In his eight-year career, all with the 49ers, McDonald has 210 tackles and 19 1/2 sacks.
