Ex-49ers DL McDonald charged with felony, other counts

Ray McDonald, a former defensive lineman for the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears, was charged with felony false imprisonment and three misdemeanors on Thursday — the result of a May 25 incident involving his ex-fiancee and her baby.
McDonald also was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence, child endangerment and violating a court order that he stay away from the alleged victim, according to the San Francisco Chronicle and other reports from the Bay Area.
McDonald was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Santa Clara County (Calif.) Superior Court. If convicted, he could be sentenced to as many as three years in prison.
Prosecutor James Demertzis said, “It is unconscionable and illegal for any woman to be trapped — whether it be behind a dining room table or in a relationship filled with fear and violence.”
McDonald, 30, was arrested May 25 after allegedly breaking through a bedroom door to get to his ex-fiancee and their daughter.
A woman, identified as the mother of the alleged victim, told a 911 dispatcher that McDonald was drunk.
The 6-foot-3, 290-pound lineman then tried to take the baby before leaving, according to the 911 call.
McDonald was later arrested at the San Jose home of retired 49ers defensive lineman Justin Smith, a former teammate.
McDonald was arrested again two days later for violating an emergency protective order by returning to the woman’s home. He posted a total of $20,000 bail for both incidents and was released each time.
McDonald also had been arrested Aug. 31 in another incident involving the woman, who alleged that McDonald “choked me, dragged and tried to remove me from the house and put his knee in my stomach when I was 10 weeks pregnant.” He was not charged in that case.
The 49ers released McDonald in December after another woman accused him of rape. McDonald has not been charged in that case, although his defamation lawsuit against the alleged victim was dismissed.
McDonald signed a one-year contract with the Bears in March, but the team released him after his arrest in May.
McDonald had 39 tackles and three sacks in 14 games last season. In his eight-year career, all with the 49ers, McDonald has 210 tackles and 19 1/2 sacks.
