The Philadelphia Eagles on Monday announced the signing of unretired guard John Moffitt to a one-year contract.

The team, which previously cut Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis, released undrafted rookie guard Cole Manhart to make room.

Moffitt, who abruptly retired from the NFL in 2013 at age 27, recently said he is planning to make a comeback after battling drug issues.

The Denver Broncos, who still owned his rights, waived Moffitt from the reserve/retired list on June 17.

Moffitt, drafted in the third round by the Seattle Seahawks in 2011, started 15 games for the Seahawks before being traded to the Broncos in August 2013. He played in two games for Denver before suddenly retiring.

In March 2014, Moffitt was charged with assault and possession of marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy while at a Chicago nightclub. While with the Seahawks, Moffitt had pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct after being accused of urinating in public and criminal trespass.

Moffitt had been training with FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, who operates an MMA-style facility in Los Angeles.

“I have never been so proud of a guy I’ve trained than I am of John Moffitt,” Glazer wrote on Twitter on June 17. “Retired two years ago (because) he knew he had drug issues, took time to go to rehab, clean up his life, beat his demons and he has taken his life back! Guy inspires us every day. He came to me three months ago to train to take his career back. He’s become the favorite of every player in our gym. He officially unretired today. Free agent starting guard. So proud of him to get here.”
