Eagles ready to take Cowboys’ vaunted o-line down a notch

Published

on

PHILADELPHIA — While the Philadelphia Eagles have struggled against the pass this season, giving up 25 touchdown passes in 11 games, they have been very solid against the run.

The Eagles have held their past six opponents to an average of 89 rushing yards per game and 3.6 yards per carry. But they will face their biggest test of the season Thursday when they face the Dallas Cowboys and NFL rushing leader DeMarco Murray.

Murray has rushed for 100-plus yards in 10 of 11 games this season. The Cowboys’ offensive line, which features three first-round picks, has been praised as one of the best blocking units in the league.

“They’re OK,” nose tackle Bennie Logan said. “To be honest, I’m getting tired of hearing about them. Their offensive line, they gotta line up and play us. It’s not a (bigger) challenge for us. It’s the next game. It’s on Thanksgiving Day.”

Said defensive end Fletcher Cox: “People talk about their offensive line. But what about us? What about our defensive line? We got it on tape that we got the people to stop the run. We’ll be ready to play on Thursday.”

The Eagles are thin at one of the key positions against the run, inside linebacker. DeMeco Ryans went down with a season-ending Achilles injury last month. Casey Matthews and Emmanuel Acho have been rotating at the position, but Acho suffered a groin injury in Sunday’s win over Tennessee and is questionable.

If he can’t go, rookie first-round pick Marcus Smith, who was drafted as an outside linebacker and has had limited practice time inside, might have to play some.

The 6-foot, 214-pound Murray is a handful.

He’s fast, he’s smart, he’s decisive when he hits the hole and gets downhill,” said safety Malcolm Jenkins. “He has that demeanor about his running style that he’s not afraid of contact. A lot of times he looks for it.

“He’s done a great job of breaking those first contacts (with a defender). We just have to swarm to the ball. The biggest thing for us that’s helped us out is, we don’t always fit the run perfect, we don’t always have the best scheme, but we just run to the ball. We smother the ballcarrier.”

Murray has helped the Cowboys stay out of third-and-longs this season, and the Eagles know they need to limit his yards on first and second down.

SERIES HISTORY: 111th meeting. The Cowboys lead the series, 62-48. The Eagles won the most recent meeting, in Week 17 last year, beating the Cowboys 24-22 to finish 10-6 and win the NFC East. They had lost the previous three meetings.

MEDICAL WATCH: LT Jason Peters was a full practice participant for the second straight day despite being listed on the injury report with a quad issue. He will play Thursday. … LB Casey Matthews has been rotating at one of the inside linebacker slots with Emmanuel Acho. But with Acho nursing a groin injury, Matthews almost certainly will play a lot more snaps Thursday, and first-round pick Marcus Smith could see increased action as well.

GAMEPLAN: The Cowboys have made a major commitment to the run this season. They are third in the league in run percentage and DeMarco Murray is leading the league in rushing. Murray’s success has resulted in a lot of third-and-short situations for the Cowboys. The Eagles, who had done a solid job against the run most of the season, will try to clamp down on Murray on first and second down and put quarterback Tony Romo in some obvious passing situations.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH:

–Eagles ILB Mychal Kendricks vs. Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray. If the Eagles are going to neutralize the NFL rushing leader, Kendricks must have a big game.

–Eagles SWR Jordan Matthews vs. Cowboys SCB Sterling Moore. Matthews has become Mark Sanchez’s go-to guy on third down. He has a five-inch height advantage over the 5-10 Moore.

–Eagles CBs Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher vs. Cowboys WRs Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams. Romo’s ability to extend plays is going to put a lot of pressure on the Eagles’ oft-maligned corners.
