Eagles pass defense shredded by Rodgers

Published

PHILADELPHIA — If there is one thing that is going to stand in the way of the Philadelphia Eagles making a Super Bowl run this season, it’s their pass defense.

The Eagles went up against the hottest quarterback in the NFL Sunday and got it handed to them. Aaron Rodgers threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns in a 53-20 Packers victory that dropped the Eagles into a tie for first place with the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East with a 7-3 record.

“They beat us in every phase of defense,” defensive coordinator Bill Davis said. “We didn’t get pressure on the quarterback. He was in rhythm. They hit their timing. He was accurate. They hit the deep ball. Third down, we couldn’t get them off the field on third down even when the advantage was to us.

“Give the credit to the Packers and what they did. We had a horrible day today and didn’t execute on any level.”

The Eagles entered the game with 32 sacks, the second most in the NFL. They had 25 in the previous five games, including 14 with a three- or four-man rush. But they couldn’t get to Rodgers fast enough no matter how many pass-rushers they sent after him.

The Eagles have given up 22 touchdown passes in 10 games. That’s just three fewer than they gave up all of last season. They entered the game ranked 18th in third-down pass defense and got riddled by Rodgers on third down. He converted six third downs of seven yards or more.

“The third downs were probably the most disappointing because we got them in third-and-manageable for us and he kept executing and we didn’t,” Davis said. “We just had a bad day.”
