Eagles host RB Mathews
Ryan Mathews is scheduled to be in Philadelphia on Wednesday and could fill the vacancy created when the Eagles shipped running back LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills.
Mathews, 27, spent his first five NFL seasons with the San Diego Chargers. He was limited to six games last season because of foot and ankle injuries and had just 74 carries for 330 yards and three touchdowns.
Eagles coach Chip Kelly is showing no aversion to injury-risk free agents.
Mathews, who started 14 games in 2011 and 2013, would combine with Darren Sproles to bring the Eagles a solid combination — but nowhere near as special as McCoy-Sproles in terms of playmaking ability.
The Eagles’ major makeover has precious few remnants remaining from former coach Andy Reid’s team, especially at skill positions. His two leading rushers, receivers and every quarterback from his final 2012 roster are gone.
While the market might be shaky for Mathews overall, there is reason to believe the Eagles are legitimate buyers despite Mathews’ durability issues.
Kelly acquired linebacker Kiko Alonso and quarterback Sam Bradford, two players coming back from major injuries.
