Eagles 34, Rams 28

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams, but they still had to hold on for dear life to edge the St. Louis Rams 34-28 on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

Special teams got the Eagles (4-1) off and running as, for the second straight week, they blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. The Rams (1-3) had the ball on their 20 when James Casey, a reserve tight end, knifed through to block the attempt by Johnny Hekker. Chris Maragos scooped it up on the 10 and scored to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead with 14:37 left in the first quarter.

After the Eagles kicked a couple of field goals to make it 13-0, the Rams finally got on the board with 3:23 left in the first half. The key play was a 32-yard pass from quarterback Austin Davis to wide receiver Kenny Britt, which put the ball on the Eagles’ 10-yard line. Two plays later, Davis had time to find wide receiver Brian Quick open in the end zone to make it 13-7.

But the Eagles got that touchdown to take a 20-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. Wide receiver Riley Cooper went high in the air to take the ball away from cornerback Janoris Jenkins in the end zone for a 9-yard TD with 30 seconds left in the first half.

It didn’t take the Eagles long to score in the second half, although it was their defense that did it. The Rams had first down on their 11 when linebacker Trent Cole hammered Davis from the blind side and the ball came loose. After a frantic scramble, Eagles defensive end Cedric Thornton came up with it in the end zone and the Eagles led 27-7 with 12:17 left in the period.

Thornton figured in another big defensive play that helped the Eagles pad their lead to 34-7 with 2:15 left in the third quarter. Linebacker Brandon Graham stripped the ball from running back Zac Stacy and Thornton fielded the loose ball and returned it 42 yards to the Rams 24. One play later, Foles found Maclin wide open in the end zone.

The Rams scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to make it close, and then they got real close when Davis found Quick in the end zone for a 5-yard TD with 4:41 left to play, which made it 34-28.

NOTES: When Eagles S Chris Maragos returned a blocked punt for a TD in the first quarter it marked the first time in franchise history the Eagles scored a special teams TD in three straight games. … Rams CB Trumaine Johnson (knee) missed his third straight game and was once again replaced at LCB by rookie E.J. Gaines. … Eagles RT Lane Johnson started in his first game of the season after being suspended for the first four games because he tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug. … Rams RB Zac Stacy left the game late in the third quarter with a calf injury and did not return.
