Dolphins to Interview Shanahan, Austin
The Dolphins will interview former Broncos and Redskins coach Mike Shanahan for their vacant head coaching job this week, according to NFL Media’s Albert Breer. In addition, the team also plans to interview interim coach Dan Campbell and Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported. NFL Media’s Rand Getlin added that former Bills coach Doug Marrone will also get an interview with the team. Shanahan is 63 years old and has only one playoff victory to his name since winning Super Bowl XXXIII. As we noted in the San Francisco post — a job that Shanahan is also interested in — his best years might be behind him, and his offense was most effective of late when run by his son, Kyle, who has a better job in Atlanta. This won’t stop teams from at least kicking the tires, though. After recent successes by Pete Carroll and Bruce Arians, older, more seasoned head coaches are coming back around. They won’t be ignored like they used to be.
